BIOGRAPHY

Alicia Hillman (BMus hons, first class)  lives and works as a Birmingham based saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and teacher.

Currently working for Bromsgrove Music Service (Music for You), Birmingham Services for Education along with her private teaching studio, Alicia teaches saxophone, clarinet, flute and oboe to all ages and abilities with over five years of teaching experience.

In 2016 Alicia was offered a scholarship to study Saxophone at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under Naomi Sullivan’s and Andrew Tweed’s tutelage. She has attended masterclasses from renowned saxophonists such as Arno Bornkamp, Mariano Garcia, Lars Lien, Kurt Bertels, Kyle Horch and Jonathan Radford.

Collaborating and learning from others in chamber ensembles is Alicia’s passion, especially making multiple voices sound as one. Performing in the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Saxophone Octet at the World Saxophone Congress 2018 in Croatia was a privilege. Alicia has been an active member of the Saxophone department, creating up-and-coming Eastside Quartet along with other chamber groups.

Saxology, a community driven project working with musicians of all ages and abilities, to promote the Saxophone in various settings and genres, was the brainchild of Alicia Hillman during her fourth year of her undergraduate degree. Working closely with students from Birmingham and Staffordshire Music Services, along with musicians from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Band of the West Midlands Fire Service, Saxology showcased local talent and demonstrated the capabilities of the Saxophone in a variety of chamber settings.

Orchestral performances include premiering Michael Wolter’s Concerto for Nine Saxophones and Orchestra, a Sousa recording project for Naxos, WWI commemoration with the Coldstream Guards, Multi-Storey Orchestra project, Rhapsody in Blue with Stratford Symphony Orchestra plus numerous Royal Birmingham Conservatoire performances.

Studying abroad at ArtEZ Conservatorium (the Netherlands) with Johan van der Linden was an exciting experience, enabling Alicia to be part of the prestigious ArtEZ/HKU Saxophone Orchestra.

Alicia is an honoured winner of county competitions and has attained funding from the Macfarlane Walker Trust, Maddocks/Mills funds and is a Help Musicians Postgraduate Performance Award holder. She is extremely grateful for their support and financial assistance.

Recently Alicia was successful in her application to continue her studies through a postgraduate degree at Royal College of Music and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, receiving offers and generous scholarships. She is looking-forward to continue her development at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in September 2020.
